It is said that music is the universal language and most people, whether they're living in a small community in Africa or working in a fabricated strainers factory here in Akron, have some style that they enjoy listening to for entertainment. If you're interested in orchestra music than you should definitely attend a performance of the Akron Symphony Orchestra. This group has been together since 1952 and is one of the musical staples of the culture of the city. Here is a little more about the history of the ASO and some reasons you might choose to attend a concert.

The Greater Akron Musical Association operates the ASO, along with the Akron Symphony Chorus, the Akron Youth Orchestra, and runs a number of educational and outreach programs. There are those working with lead castings to those in high school who have a passion for classical music that extends beyond just wanting to listen to a concert. You can read Maestro Christopher Wilkins's blog, browse through the connect e-newsletter, or view interviews with musicians and guest artists on the ASO podcast.

When most people think or orchestra music, the names that come to mind are Bach, Beethoven, and others from the Romantic and Classical eras. But the ASO is actually plays a variety of musical styles. This Christmas the conductor of the Cleveland Pops, Carl Topilow is coming in for a annual concert of classic and contemporary favorites from the season. If you're visiting from Toronto condos for the holidays or are looking for a great early Christmas present, this might be a great choice.

The ASO's Concerts for Kids program brings music to more than 5000 children between the ages of three and six as they travel to locations throughout the Akron area. And, if you have a kid at home who has an affinity for a musical instrument than you might want to audition them to be a part of the Akron Youth Symphony or the Greater Akron Youth Philharmonic. Whether they're destined to become a Canadian lawyer or a doctor in Florida, it has been documented that practicing music can improve the mind and help them get there.

There are many ways to get involved with the Akron Symphony Orchestra, both as a donor and a volunteer. Their annual event, Fanfare, is known as one of the best fundraisers in Northeast Ohio. Each year features a different era of music and gives you a great chance to have a night out while you're donating to a great arts organization. Those working in vacuum excavation to the mayor come together for this one evening in May. The symphony concerts are located at E.J Thomas Hall and the Akron Civic Theatre. They are located on Hill and South Main Street respectively.
