An advantageous location on a major waterway has meant that those with a location in Akron have easy access to several types of industry. This access comes in handy both for residential and employment purposes, helping to drive the city's economy even in a time of recession. Let's take a look at a few of the different industry sectors that keep Akron moving.
High Tech
One of the most noted industries in Akron is the high tech industry. In fact, the city was named by Newsweek magazine as one of the most important cities of the Information Age, back at the turn of the century. Here, you will find some of the most active telecommunications services in the nation. They apply the heat shrink sleeves to the wires which criss cross the continent, allowing the exchange of thousands of information bytes at the blink of an eye.
Manufacturing
Although heavy manufacturing is not what it once was in the city of Akron, you will still find several factories in operation, run by various businesses. Myers Industries continues to develop polymer products from within the city. You may find the crates and baskets manufactured here at the end of a crane Deming built for heavy construction, or in various shipping operations across the country.
That polymer base provides a strong foundation for one of the biggest names in Akron industry, the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company. Best known for the tires that you will see under the front auto plate of any vehicle, Goodyear manufactures a variety of other products and is a Fortune 500 company. In addition to manufacturing operations, it also has its corporate headquarters right here in Akron. A recent agreement means that Goodyear will be a part of the economic landscape of Akron for years to come!
Energy
Another important corporate presence in our city is FirstEnergy, the second of Akron's Fortune 500 crowd. FirstEnergy specializes in diversified energy projects. While it has not always boasted the best environmental record, the company has recently started to include campaigns encouraging the more efficient use of energy and energy smart products such as the central heating boiler.
Health
As with most large cities in the country today, the health industry is the primary employer within Akron. There are a diverse array of opportunities in this field. Nurses are needed for hospital and home health services, doctors for practice and within institutions, and dieticians and technicians for technical work.
Several more large companies are present in Akron, with both corporate and manufacturing operations. The financial industry includes FirstMerit Bank, and the headquarters of Acme Fresh Market of the food industry can also be found in downtown Akron.
